All of the time and some people are more susceptible than others.
If you suspect a tax scam situation report it to the IRS.
These people are not good citizens and might need to be put in jail, as you can see happening on the right here..
Use this Form 3949a and send it to Internal Revenue Service, Fresno, CA 93888.
Senior citizens are often victims and are taken for the big ride.
They sometimes end up with nothing like my uncle Andrew who always thought he was smarter than everyone else until he got hustled big time and lost a ton of dough.
He was so embarrassed that he wouldn't admit it to the others in his extended family who eventually found out later on.
He had to live with the knowledge that he was not so smart after all until he died.
Unfortunately it was a well needed lesson in humility.
Use your common sense and if it sounds too good to be true or if someone offers a super way to save tax dollars with investment etc, check it out first with the IRS.
If it is legit, the person who you are dealing with will most likely be understanding.
If they are hustlers they might well start with the sweet talk baloney.
And now a word from the nice IRS lady about emails etc.
